What Is Dopiaza Curry?
Dopiaza is a mild, onion-rich curry with a long-standing place on British Indian restaurant menus. Its character comes from using onions generously — both in a slow-cooked onion and tomato sauce and as extra onions cooked into the finished curry — giving a sweet, balanced flavour with gentle warmth rather than strong chilli heat.

What Does Dopiaza Taste Like?
Dopiaza tastes sweet, savoury and rounded. Slowly cooked onion gives the sauce its body and natural sweetness, while coriander, cumin, garlic, ginger and garam masala add warmth without taking over.
Because no single spice dominates, Dopiaza is an easy curry to love — familiar curry-house flavour with a soft, comforting finish.
How Hot Is Dopiaza?
Dopiaza is the mildest curry in the Curry Club range. Its warmth is gentle, which makes it a good starting point if you are new to curry-house food or cooking for someone who prefers less chilli heat.
The kit also includes an optional whole dried Kashmiri chilli if you would like a little more kick.
Where Does Dopiaza Come From?
Dopiaza has roots in South Asian cooking and a long-standing place on British Indian restaurant menus. Our version follows the British curry-house style: a slow-cooked onion and tomato sauce with extra onions cooked into the finished curry.
What Goes Well With Dopiaza?
Dopiaza works with chicken, lamb, paneer or vegetables. Serve it with rice, naan or chips, and scatter over fresh coriander at the end if you like.
As the mildest curry in the range, it also makes a good partner for a hotter curry such as Madras when you are cooking for people with different heat preferences.
Dopiaza vs Other Curries
Dopiaza vs Rogan Josh
Rogan Josh is a step up in heat, with Kashmiri chilli and fragrant spices giving it a richer, slightly smoky depth. Dopiaza is milder and sweeter, built around onion.
Dopiaza vs Madras
Madras is hot and tomato-rich with a lively chilli kick. Choose Dopiaza when you want curry-house flavour with gentle warmth instead.
How to Make Dopiaza at Home
The secret to a good Dopiaza at home is patience with the onions. Cooking them slowly until soft and golden builds the sweetness the whole curry depends on, before the spice paste and tomatoes go in.
